If you’ve been waiting to take the plunge and make your home a bit smarter then now is a good time to invest.

Amazon has cut prices on its most popular Echo smart speakers with the Echo Dot currently reduced to £29.99 – saving £20 – and the standard Echo is now £79.99 – saving £10.

These are good discounts on the latest Alexa-powered devices but there is one thing to note about the new Echo Dot.

This gadget was updated late last year and now includes better sound and a refreshed design but Dot stock has been incredibly short since December.
In fact, Amazon recently confirmed that this entry-entry speaker won’t now ship to homes until March 8.

Luckily, you can still get a very cheap way of accessing Alexa without having to wait until later in the year.

The Echo Input was announced alongside the refreshed Echo Dot at Amazon’s yearly update event last September.

The Echo Input is a brand new device that simply adds Alexa to any speaker you may already own.

Unlike the standard Echo, or Echo Dot, there’s no internal speaker inside the device but this does make it incredibly slim – in fact it’s just is just 12.5mm tall.

Echo Input connects to your speaker through a 3.5mm audio cable or Bluetooth, and features a four-microphone array so you can talk to Alexa from across the room.

At launch, this mini device would have cost you £34.99 but that price has just been slashed to under £20.

Once you’ve hooked the Input up to your existing stereo system you can then use it to control your lights, heating and music playback via simple voice commands.

News, weather and travel reports can also be accessed and Alexa can even respond to a swathe of queries and set timers and alerts.

If the Input doesn’t take your fancy and you want a cheap smart speaker that’s available right now then the Google Home Mini is also worth your attention.

This intelligent device offers many features you’ll find on the Echo Dot and Google has currently cut the cost.

This means you can buy the Home Mini for £29 – saving £20.

Google’s standard Home speaker has also been cut in price with this louder device now costing £79 – saving £50.
